Grade 5 / Elective: Grade five Family and Consumer Science education will focus on sewing. Students will begin by learning basic hand sewing techniques. They will use these skills to create an individual project. Next, students will learn to use a sewing machine. Fifth graders will use the machine to work on a community service project. 


Grade 6 / Elective: Grade six Family and Consumer Science education will focus on foods, nutrition and wellness.  Students will identify and create conditions that promote safety, proper food handling and sanitation in the kitchen. Personal nutrition and health will be examined. Students will prepare and serve food in cooperative groups. Table etiquette will be included. Environmental issues such as recycling and composting will be explored. 


Grade 7 / Required: Grade seven Family and Consumer Science education will focus on consumer and resource management. Students will examine wants versus needs. The class will use technology to compute loans and interest. Seventh graders will be given a career and a monthly budget. Next, they will write checks for expenses and balance their budget.

Grade 8 / Required: Grade eight Family and Consumer Science education will explore different domains of child development including physical, emotional and cognitive development. Students will explore ways to care for an infant. Eighth graders will examine health issues such as smoking and sexually transmitted infections. We will conclude the term with a unit on careers.
